Marantz SR7015 (Test) – audiovision
Der SR7015 ist der erste Verstärker von Marantz mit HDMI-2.1-Schnittstellen. Zudem wartet das zweitgrößte Modell der Japaner mit neuen Audio-Features auf. Und das ist längst noch nicht alles.
Im Juli brachte Denon seinen ersten AV-Verstärker mit HDMI-2.1-Schnittstellen inklusive 8K-Unterstützung auf den Markt; einen ausführlichen Test des AVC-X4700H haben wir bereits in Ausgabe 8-2020 zu Papier gebracht. Jetzt legt der Schwesterkonzern Marantz nach und spendiert seinen AV-Verstärkern des aktuellen Jahrgangs die neue Videotechnik – den Anfang macht der SR7015. Mit 1.700 Euro kostet das zweitgrößte Marantz-Modell erheblich weniger als das im September auf den Markt kommende Flaggschiff SR8015 (3.000 Euro) und sogar 100 Euro weniger als der zwei Jahre alte Vorgänger SR7013, allerdings auch 200 Euro mehr als sein Blutsverwandter (dazu später mehr) – der Denon AVC-4700H. Dass sich die beiden Marken ein Großteil der Technik teilen, ist ein offenes Geheimnis und so finden sich praktisch alle Features des Denon auch im Marantz wieder. Entsprechend ist auch bei Marantz der UKW-Tuner ein Auslaufmodell, lediglich der SR-Einsteiger 5015 empfängt analoge Ultrakurzwelle, der SR5015DAB bietet zudem, wie der Name verrät, das terrestrische Digitalradio DAB+. Alle anderen Marantz-Modelle, auch der SR7015, müssen sich mit Web-Radio begnügen.
8K-Video und mehr
8K60hz oder 4K120Hz mit variablen Bildwechselfrequenzen zaubert der SR7015 aus seinem HDMI-Board, allerdings nur an einem Eingang sowie zwei Ausgängen. Derzeit dürfte das reichen, doch wenn am Jahresende die neuen Spielkonsolen von Microsoft und Sony erscheinen, könnte es für anspruchsvolle Gamer eng werden. Abhilfe schafft hier der eARC, der HD-Ton vom Fernseher empfängt, womit man eine der Konsolen auch am 8K-Fernseher anstöpseln kann, ohne beim HD-Ton Einbußen befürchten zu müssen.
Alle anderen Eingänge verarbeiten Signale nach der HDMI-2.0-Norm, beherrschen aber ebenso moderne Video-Features wie VRR, QFT oder QMS. Neben Dolby Vision und HLG versteht sich der Marantz auch auf HDR10+ und das neue Dynamic HDR.
Auch in Sachen Audio haben die Japaner aufgerüstet: Auro-Fans dürfen sich auf die Unterstützung von nunmehr 11.1-Kanälen freuen, also inklusive der beiden Back-Rear-Kanäle. Dies gelingt entweder in einer 7.1.2-Konfiguration oder unter Nutzung von zwei Pre-outs und einer externen Stereo-Endstufe im 7.1.4-Modus.
Bei Yamaha hat sich Marantz das Speichern von zwei separaten Boxen-Setups abgeschaut. So darf man etwa für das Hören von Stereo-Musik oder 5.1-SACD eine andere Lautsprecher-Konfiguration anlegen als für 3D-Filmton mit 11.2-Kanälen. In Kombination mit den Schnellwahl-Speichern lässt sich dann mit nur einem Knopfdruck auf der Fernbedienung zwischen den Boxen-Presets wechseln. Da auch Audyssey Bestandteil eines Boxen-Setups ist, kann man zudem zwei Messungen vornehmen oder bei einem Boxen-Preset den Audio-Equalizer nutzen.
Alle Decoder an Bord
Bei der digitalen Audioverarbeitung setzt Marantz auf 32-Bit-D/A-Wandler von AKM (AK4458). An Decodern ist so ziemlich alles vorhanden, was derzeit Rang und Namen hat: Dolby Atmos, DTS:X (inklusive IMAX-Enhanced), Auro 3D sowie deren Upmixer Dolby Surround, DTS Neural:X und die Auro-Matic. Hinzu kommen Dolbys Height Virtualizer sowie DTS Virtual:X für Höhen- und Surround-Sound auch ohne Höhen- und Surround-Boxen. Ein Firmware-Update wird dem Gerät zudem das 3D-Tonformat MPEG-H nachreichen, das für den Einsatz in Streaming-Anwendungen und Rundfunksystemen entwickelt wurde. Bei den Klangprogrammen hält sich Marantz wie in der Vergangenheit zurück, nur das „Virtual“-Klangprogramm ist vorhanden. Die Sinnhaftigkeit der farbigen Wahltasten auf der Fernbedienung „Movie“, „Music“ und „Game“ will sich uns nicht erschließen, denn hinter allen Tasten verbergen sich die gleichen Decoder in der gleichen Reihenfolge. Die „Pure“-Taste bietet hingegen die Modi „Direct“, „Pure Direct“ und „Auto“. Das Cross-Format-Upmixing, das bei den Modellen des Jahrgangs 2019 zeitweise eingeschränkt wurde, ist in vollem Umfang möglich; Ausnahmen bilden wie immer native 3D-Inhalte.
Keine Überraschungen gibt es bei der Einmess-Software, hier verrichtet Audysseys größtes System „MultEQ XT32“, das bis zu 8 Messpunkte unterstützt, seine Arbeit. Zum Funktionsumfang gehören auch die Loudness-Schaltung „Dynamic EQ“, die Dynamikreduktion „Dynamic Volume“, die Anti-Dröhn-Schaltung „LFC“ sowie die separate Einmessung von zwei Woofern („SubEQ HT“).
Die kostenpflichtige „Audyssey MultEQ Editor“-App (20 Euro) erlaubt ferner die Manipulation der Einmessung nach Hörvorlieben, etwa durch das Ziehen einer eigenen Zielkurve, nach welcher der Frequenzgang optimiert wird. Für Klangtüftler eine lohnenswerte Investition, zumal sich der Equalizer im SR7015 bei aktivem Audyssey nicht aktivieren lässt. Zudem regelt der EQ keine Subwoofer und alle anderen Kanäle erst ab 63 Hertz.
9 Endstufen für 13 Kanäle
Für die ganz großen Heimkinos reicht es mit 9 Endstufen nicht ganz, 11.2-Kanäle kann der SR7015 aber ansteuern, was unter Mitwirkung einer externen Stereo-Endstufe ein volles 7.2.4-Setup ergibt. Als Neuerung kann man alle internen Endstufen abschalten und den Marantz als reine Vorstufe nutzen, um separate Endstufen über die Pre-outs anzusteuern. Zudem dürfen ungenutzte, interne Endstufen für das Bi-Amping oder zwei weitere Hörzonen verwendet werden, wobei der Verstärker in Hörzone 2 und 3 auch Digitalströme der S/PDIF-Buchsen und Koaxial-Buchsen wiedergibt; in Zone 2 zudem HDMI-Signale mit bis zu 4K/60p.
Die Konfiguration fällt bei beiden Lautsprecher-Presets identisch und vorbildlich aus: Pegel und Distanzen aller Boxen darf man einzeln mit 0,5-Dezibel-Schritten respektive 1-Zentimeter-Einheiten justieren. Im Bass-Management kann man für jede Box separat die Crossover-Frequenz bestimmen. In einem weiteren Setup lassen sich zudem für die 2-Kanal-Wiedergabe Bass-Management, Pegel und Distanzen unabhängig von den Einstellungen der Mehrkanalton-Wiedergabe konfigurieren.
Mehr Kontakt geht kaum
Bei den Schnittstellen ist so ziemlich alles vohanden, was ein modernes Heimkino braucht. Statt der FM-Antennenbuchse gibt es nun Cinch-Eingänge für einen Tuner, Vinyl-Freunde können den Plattenspieler ohne Vorverstärker anstöpseln. Nur noch selten findet man den analogen 7.1-Cinch-Input, an den man zum Beispiel einen alten SACD-Player anschließen kann. 8 HDMI-Eingänge, 3 HDMI-Ausgänge und 4 Digitalanschlüsse sind großzügig bemessen. Für Videorecorder, DVD-Player oder Röhrenprojektoren stehen sogar noch Ein- wie Ausgänge für FBAS und YUV parat. Wie es sich für einen großen AV-Verstärker gehört, sind alle Anschlüsse vergoldet für einen besseren Schutz vor Korrosion.
Am bulligen Aussehen der Marantz-Boliden hat sich nichts geändert. Auf der Front sitzt zwischen der Eingangswahl und dem Lautstärkeregler das „Bullauge“ mit Dezibel-Anzeige. Unter der großen Klappe versteckt sich das zweizeilige Punktmatrix-Display, das Zuschauer bzw. Zuhörer unter anderem das anliegende Tonformat und eine Kanalmatrix mitteilt. Neben vielen Bedientasten gibt es Anschlüsse für HDMI, USB, Kopfhörer und das Mess-Mikrofon. Die Materialanmutung des Geräts ist gut, statt des Plastiks der geschwungenen Wangen wäre uns Aluminium allerdings lieber gewesen.
Multimedia & Bedienung
Alle neuen Video-Funktionen haben wir im Kasten oben zusammengefasst. Nützlich ist der Reiter „Video / 4K / 8K Signal Format“, in dem man Auflösung und Farbtiefe für die Ausgabe auf den TV-Apparat abstimmt. Darüber hinaus trumpft der SR7015 mit Funktionen auf, die Marantz seit Generationen verbaut; hierzu gehört etwa der vielseitige manuelle Video-Equalizer plus die 6 vorgegebenen Bildmodi; zwei davon mit ISF-Zertifizierung.
Nichts geändert hat sich bei der Steuerung des Geräts: Die Fernbedienung ist übersichtlich gestaltet und verfügt über eine Hintergrundbeleuchtung, die per separater Taste aktiviert wird. Die meisten Tasten fluoreszieren zudem, sofern sie vorher mit Licht betankt wurden. Natürlich lässt sich der SR7015 auch über die HEOS-App bedienen. Die praktische Web-Control-Funktion erreicht man mit einem Internet-Browser über die IP-Adresse des Receivers; die Funktion bietet ein grafisches Menü, mit dem sich der Amp komplett bedienen lässt.
HDMI 2.1 und die Video-Funktionen 8K bei Fernsehern ist kein Novum mehr, bei AV-Verstärkern hingegen schon. Nach Denon implementiert nun auch Marantz erstmals HDMI-2.1-Schnittstellen in seine Sound-Zentralen. 8K-Bilder mit 60 Hertz sind jedoch nicht die einzige Innovation, die der SR7015 mitbringt. So erlaubt das neue Video-Board erstmals auch die Durchleitung von HDR-Metadaten für erweiterte Kontraste und Farben in den Formaten HDR10+ und dem zukünftigen Format Dynamic HDR – und das an allen 8 HDMI-Eingängen und 3 HDMI-Ausgängen. Auch Features wie QFT, QMS, ALLM und VRR sind an allen HDMI-Buchsen verfügbar.
Spielefans profitieren zudem von hohen und variablen Bildwiederholraten mit bis zu 120 Hertz bei 4K-Auflösung und niedrigen Latenzraten. Die Video-Features im Überblick: • 8K: Dank 8K-Passthrough mit 60 Hertz bietet der SR7015 ein enorm detailreiches Bild. Full-HD- und 4K-Inhalte können zudem auf 8K skaliert werden.
• 4K/120Hz: Die hohe Bewegungsschärfe mit 4K-Passthrough bei 120 Bildern pro Sekunde zahlt sich besonders beim Gaming aus.
• Variable Refresh Rate (VRR): Die variable Bildwiederholrate verringert oder verhindert Verzögerungen, Unterbrechungen und Frame-Tearing und sorgt so für ein flüssigeres Gaming.
• HDR: Der SR7015 unterstützt HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) und Dynamic HDR in jeder einzelnen Szene oder Frame für Frame mit idealen Werten für Tiefe, Detail, Bildhelligkeit und Kontrast sowie breiteres Farbspektrum. Mit an Bord sind auch ein 4:4:4 Pure Color Subsampling, 3D- und BT.2020-Passthrough.
• Quick Media Switching: QMS eliminiert leere Anzeigen („Schwarzbilder“) vor dem Abspielen von Filmen und Videos.
• Quick Frame Transport: QFT verringert die Latenz, was besonders für Echtzeit-Anwendungen wie Gaming und Virtual Reality Vorteile bringt.
• eARC-Unterstützung: Der Enhanced Audio Return Channel ermöglicht die Übertragung der neuesten, verlustfreien 3D-Audioformate direkt vom Fernseher zum AV-Receiver über ein HDMI-Kabel.
• Auto Low Latency Mode: ALLM unterstützt Spiele mit niedriger Latenz über die Spielkonsole Xbox One (kompatibler Fernseher erforderlich).
• HDCP 2.3: Der Marantz SR7015 versteht sich auf den neuesten Kopierschutz an allen HDMI-Anschlüssen.
Tonqualität
Mit 121 Watt im 5-Kanal-Betrieb (6 Ohm) und 90 Watt im 7-Kanal-Modus (6 Ohm) besitzt der SR7015 in etwa genauso viel Power wie sein Vorgänger. Im Stereo-Modus kletterte die Leistung gar auf 213 Watt (4 Ohm). Bei normalem Betrieb zieht der Amp durchschnittlich 332 Watt aus der Steckdose, im Eco-Modus (Betriebsart „On“) sinkt der Verbrauch auf gute 153 Watt.
Seit ein paar Generationen spielen Marantz-Geräte ausgesprochen klar, feinauflösend und transparent – ohne dabei ins Unmusikalische oder Analytische abzudriften. Der SR7015 bildet hier keine Ausnahme. 5.1-Musik aus allen Genres stellte der Marantz authentisch und mit hoher Spielfreude in den Hörraum, blieb dabei leichtfüßig und agil. Im Bass eher schlank abgestimmt, folgte der Bolide jedem Tiefton-Gitarrenlauf akkurat und sauber – hier wurde nichts verschluckt oder verschliffen.
Die Einmess-Automatik von Audyssey erledigte ihren Job gewohnt zuverlässig – mit einer Ausnahme: Unsere rückwärtigen Regalboxen beschnitt der SR7015 nicht im Tiefton und wies ihnen den vollen Frequenzgang zu. Beim „Powerful Bass“ in Dolbys „Amaze“-Clipp übersteuerten bzw. verzerrten die Boxen dann unschön. Pegel und Distanzen wurden hingegen akkurat gesetzt. Mit leicht abfallender „Reference“-Frequenzkurve sind auch höhere Hörpegel kein Problem, garstig-grellen YouTube-Clips kann man mit selbst erstellten Zielkurven in der Audyssey-App zu Leibe rücken.
Decoder-Trio: Dolby atmos, DTS:X und Auro Im Menü „Lautsprecher/Endstufen-Zuweis.“ legt man beim SR7015 Art und Anzahl der Lautsprecher fest. Bei 3D-Tonformaten ist dies allerdings mit Einschränkungen verbunden. Zwar sind dank Pre-outs volle 11.2-Setups möglich, die definierte Position der Lautsprecher bestimmt jedoch die Verfügbarkeit der Decoder: Während Dolby Atmos und DTS:X stets parallel und bei allen Konfigurationen funktionieren, müssen für Auro 3D-Ton vordere Front-Height-Lautsprecher oder vordere Aufsatzboxen aktiv sein; für das hintere Boxenpaar kann man sich Height-, Decken- und Aufsatzboxen wählen. Surround-Height-Boxen (nicht zu verwechseln mit Back-Height-Boxen) schweigen bei Atmos-Ton, DTS:X nutzt sie aber.
Mit aktivem Audyssey erzielte der Marantz bei zugespielten Atmos-Trailern eine sehr weite, luftige und dabei präzise Räumlichkeit; Effekte klangen greifbar und plastisch, die Räumlichkeit tönte lückenlos und realistisch. Besagter „Powerful Bass“ drückte enorm tief und sauber, so wie es sein soll. Audyssey addierte etwas Bass hinzu. Wem das noch nicht reicht, der kann mit der App nachregeln oder den Subwoofer-Pegel anheben.
In der Dolby-Atmos-Abmischung von „Ghost in the Shell“ drückte der Kampfpanzer nicht nur kräftig im Tiefbass: Genauso überzeugend donnerten auch die Schüsse und Explosionen durch unseren Hörraum – da fühlt man sich wirklich mittendrin. Wie immer bei nur 9 laufenden Endstufen fehlen entweder die Back-Rears (5.1.4) oder ein paar Höhenboxen (7.1.2), was das Klangerlebnis im Vergleich zu vollwertigen 7.2.4-Kanälen etwas schmälert und daher einen Punktabzug zur Folge hat. Die dreistufige Dynamik-Komprimierung „Dynamik Volume“ von Audyssey funktionierte wie gewohnt zuverlässig und eignet sich ausgezeichnet für das nächtliche Leisehören – sowohl mit Dolby- als auch mit DTS-Material.
HEOS, Streaming und Multiroom Für die Verschmelzung von Streaming und Multiroom ist in allen aktuellen AV-Verstärkern bzw. AV-Receivern von Marantz und Denon das HEOS-System zuständig. Die HEOS-Technologie verteilt Musik aus dem Netz und von externen Quellen auf jedes HEOS-kompatible Gerät – egal ob AV-Zentrale, Soundbar, Kompaktanlage oder Smart-Speaker. Der gleiche Sound im Wohnzimmer aus dem AV-Receiver sowie in der Küche auf dem Smart-Speaker ist gar kein Problem mehr. Der Marantz SR7015 kann mehrkanalige Signale auf ein 2-Kanal-Format heruntermischen und an eine andere Zone oder ein anderes HEOS-Built-in-Gerät weitergeben. Damit lässt sich Dolby Atmos im Wohnzimmer hören, während man im Schlafzimmer auf einem Denon Home-Speaker einen 2-Kanal-Downmix der gleichen Quellen genießen kann. Gesteuert wird alles mit der kostenlosen HEOS-App über Smartphone und Tablet. Mit Alexa von Amazon, Google Assistant und Siri von Apple ist zudem eine Sprachsteuerung von Musikwiedergabe und AV-Verstärker möglich, allerdings wird hierfür ein kompatibler Smart-Speaker benötigt. HEOS unterstützt Streaming-Dienste wie Spotify und Spotify Free, Napster, Amazon Music (HD), TuneIn, Deezer, SoundCloud und TIDAL. Auch das einfache Zuspielen von lokaler Musik auf Tablets, Smartphones, Servern oder USB-Geräten ist möglich. Via AirPlay 2 lassen sich Songs von Apple Music kabellos zum AV-Receiver streamen; außerdem erlaubt es die Gruppierung mit anderen AirPlay 2-kompatiblen Geräten. Das Musik-Streaming kann natürlich auch über Bluetooth erfolgen, zudem sendet der AV-Verstärker auch Bluetooth-Signale aus, etwa an kompatible Lautsprecher und parallel auch an einen Bluetooth-Kopfhörer. Der SR7015 verfügt über eine „Roon Tested“-Zertifizierung und eignet sich damit für das Zusammenspiel mit dem Music-Server-System „Roon“.
Bei Stereo-Musik empfiehlt sich der SR7015 für jede Art von Genre. Egal ob Pop, Metal oder Klassik – stets spielte der Marantz fein auflösend und trotzdem musikalisch drauf los. Im „Pure Direct“-Modus, der alle nicht benötigten Klangschaltungen umgeht, stand der Japaner erwartungsgemäß auf schlankem Bass-Fuße, klang dafür aber auch sehr sauber, durchhörbar und luftig. Instrumente wurden greifbar und räumlich sauber aufgedröselt auf der Frontbühne verortet, die sich in Breite und Tiefe ausgewogen vor dem Zuhörer aufbaute.

The Marantz SR7015 comes with an impressive, if slightly overwhelming set of connections at the rear. These include a host of legacy inputs like component and composite video, along with analogue and digital audio, while for vinyl freaks there’s a phono (MM) input.
There are a total of eight HDMI inputs (seven at the rear and one at the front) and three HDMI outputs. One of the rear HDMI inputs and two of the HDMI outputs support 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz (up to a total 40GBps), while the main HDMI output also supports eARC (enhanced audio return channel).
Editor’s Note: there have been reports of issues when trying to pass 4K/120Hz, which is unfortunately something we’re currently unable to test. However Marantz has responded to these issues with the following statement:
“Some new gaming source devices that support 4K/120Hz output may not work fully with Marantz 8K AVRs. You may discover this incompatibility issue due to a HDMI chipset mismatch between the devices. When the affected system is connected to the AVR via 8K HDMI input and set to output at 4K/120Hz, and the AVR’s 4K Signal Format option is set to “8K Enhanced,” you may not see the system’s source video on their display, and may not hear the system’s source audio processed through the AVR. This problem is only present when a display that supports 4K/120Hz is used.
We are currently investigating the issue further and will offer a permanent solution at a later date. Meanwhile, we would like to provide a couple workarounds to prevent the issue in its current state:
You can connect the system to the display directly via HDMI and use the display’s ARC/eARC functionality to feed the native audio back to the AVR using the connected HDMI cable between the AVR and display. This will allow users to decode the native audio format sent from the source. With this method, the display’s CEC/ARC option must be enabled as well as the AVR’s HDMI Control and/or the AVR’s ARC option. In the AVR, this option is located within the GUI under ‘Video – HDMI Setup’.
Another workaround is to leave or change the source’s video output to 4K/60Hz instead of 4K/120Hz until a permanent solution is available. This will ensure reliable communication between the source, the AVR and the display. The source’s default is set to output at 4K/60Hz, so if no change was initiated out of the box, then nothing further needs to be done.
We apologise for this inconvenience and we are currently working tirelessly to release a permanent solution so you can enjoy the 4K/120Hz experience using the latest sources with your AVR. We will have an update soon regarding the timeline of a permanent solution. We appreciate your patience.”
All the HDMI connections support HDCP 2.3, plus they can pass 4K/60p, 3D, BT.2020, high dynamic range (HDR10, hybrid log-gamma, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision), ALLM (auto low latency mode), VRR (variable refresh rate), QMS (quick media switching), and QFT (quick frame transport). In addition, the HDMI inputs automatically rename themselves with information provided by the source (when available).

As impressive as all that sounds, it would be nice if there were two HDMI inputs that supported 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz, because some people might buy both of the upcoming next-gen consoles. However in those circumstances, you could connect one directly to your display and send the lossless audio back via eARC.

In terms of other connections there’s a LAN port, two 12V triggers, an IR Flasher and an RS232 port for serial control; as well as twin antennas which provide both built-in WiFi and Bluetooth. There are 7.1-channel inputs, along with pre-outs for all eleven channels in case you decide to use additional amplification, and the SR7015 also has outputs for dual subwoofers. However, there are no built-in tuners, which is why the SR7015 is an AV amplifier and not an AV receiver.
While there are only nine channels built-in, there are 11 sets of colour-coded binding posts, which are presented in a single line to make accessing them easier. These terminals are of decent quality and can accept bare wire, spade connectors or banana plugs.
Remote control
The SR7015 comes with the standard Marantz remote control, which uses a black brushed metal effect and a silver trim. It’s sensibly laid out, with well spaced and large buttons that make it quite ergonomic to operate, comfortable to hold and easy to use with one thumb, plus there’s a handy backlight for operating the amp in a darkened room.

However, keep in mind that the sound also depends on the acoustics of the room. Although the room acoustic enhancement program improves the sound, acoustic treatment of the walls, ceiling, windows and floor surfaces is also required for optimal results. The Marantz SR7015 was tested in a larger movie theatre, paired with a pair of Focal Chora 826 floor-standing speakers and an SVS SB16 Ultra subwoofer. Optimal acoustics have been created with diffusers front and diaphragm acoustic panels and Giga bass traps. We watched one of the episodes of the Netflix series, Blacklist, during the test, followed by listening to music, James Arthur Medicine’s current hit, but the vinyl record could not be left out of the tests, we listened to Béla Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle. The SR7015 delivered a fantastic sound in each case.
Conclusion
The Marantz SR7015 has much more advanced features and benefits than its predecessor, the SR7013. Some of the key features of the receiver are a premium 9-channel amplifier, compatibility with 3D audio formats, sophisticated gaming specifications, music sound, 8K high-definition multimedia interface connectivity with eARC, dual subwoofer outputs and built-in HEOS.

In just a few short years, Sound United has managed to rejuvenate its Denon and Marantz brands completely. You could even argue it has managed to re-invigorate the high-end receiver market as a whole, with statement pieces from both companies throwing down the gauntlet for others to follow.
We were keen to test some of the brands’ more affordable AV receivers to see if they, too, were worthy of such praise. Enter our latest review subject, the 9.2 channel SR7015 AV amplifier. It drops both a few pounds and two channels of amplification compared to its bigger and more expensive sibling, the SR8015. Yet, it manages to retain many of the same features and costs significantly less.
The SR7015 hasn’t sacrificed Marantz’s proprietary HDAM circuit boards and utilises discrete power amplifiers across all channels to give a claimed power rating of 125 watts (8 ohms, 20Hz–20kHz, 0.05% two channels driven). Read the fine print, though, and you’ll discover Marantz’s so-called 70% power guarantee, which rates the SR7015 closer to 84W with all channels driven. This is enough power – on paper at least – for a dynamic home theatre experience. It’s also a refreshingly honest admission in an age where such numbers are often over-inflated.
It supports a slew of multichannel formats, including DTS HD Master/ DTS:X, DTS Virtual: X, DTS Neural: X, Dolby Surround, Dolby True HD, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Atmos Height Virtualisation IMAX Enhanced, Auro 3D and MPEG-H via a firmware update. Its HDMI inputs are HDCP 2.3 compliant, supporting 4K and 8K video at up to 120 and 60 frames per second, respectively. eARC and CEC are also supported, along with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dynamic HDR, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) pass-through for gaming, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), QFT (Quick Frame Transport) and QMS (Quick Media Switching).
The SR7015 boasts Audyssey’s crème de la crème XT32 room correction software, with LFC (Low-Frequency Containment), Sub EQ, Dynamic Volume and Dynamic EQ. While Audyssey was becoming a bit long in the tooth compared to other room correction systems, it’s had an update in recent years, bringing it closer in line to its competitors.
Networking options include HEOS Multi-Room and network streaming, Alexa, Google Voice Assist, Apple Home Pod, Internet Radio, Spotify, Amazon Music HD, Deezer, Tidal and Napster. Both lossy and lossless formats are supported in the form of MP3, WMA, FLAC HD 192/24, WAV 192/24 and ALAC 192/24.
HIGH-END AMBITION
The SR7015 features Marantz’s distinctive ‘porthole’ on its front fascia, that’s become synonymous with the brand. There’s a simplistic, uncluttered elegance to its design, the controls buried away behind a pull-down door. Finished in matt black, the only visible controls are source and volume dials and the power button. Opening the pull-down door reveals controls to navigate its extensive setup menus along with a composite video input, USB input, HDMI input (4K/HDCP 2.3), headphone input, Audyssey mic input and a large LCD. This is a much-needed addition. As attractive as the porthole display is, its size makes it nigh on impossible to read anything from a distance. It’s an interesting conundrum that leaves owners to choose form or function.
The rear panel has seven assignable HDMI and three HDMI outputs with eARC support on the main output. Able to decode 11.2 channels, the SR7015’s 11.2 channel pre-outs can not only expand its capabilities but also allow existing channels to be powered by an external power amplifier. Legacy connections consist of three composite video inputs and two composite video outputs, three component video inputs and one component output, six analogue inputs and one analogue output and two coaxial and optical inputs. The SR7015 also provides dual independent subwoofer outputs, two 12 volt triggers, IR input, RS-232 input and Ethernet. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both supported with the installation of the included antennae. It rounds out its connections with thirteen sturdy gold-plated speaker binding posts.
The box also contains an Audyssey microphone, cardboard microphone stand, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna, power cord, quick start manual, cable labels and remote. While it sits in hand comfortably enough, the remote feels cluttered, the buttons on the smaller side. Still, the backlighting – activated by pressing a button on the edge of the remote – is a welcome addition.
Weighing 14.2kg, there’s a reassuring heft to the SR7015. Even though it isn’t made in Japan, the build has an undeniable quality. It proved a pleasure to unbox – everything is well-packed with keen attention to detail. It may seem trivial, yet such things shouldn’t be an afterthought but rather serve to reinforce the buyer’s decision.
GETTING GOING
That attention to detail is just as evident when it comes to setup. With everything clearly labelled, connecting source devices and speakers is a simple affair. Connect the SR7015 to your display, power it up, and the onscreen display will guide you through the setup process. Everything from connecting to the internet, connecting source devices and calibration is covered in clear and concise steps.
Experienced users will be tempted to skip this step, but it’s worth completing to ensure the Marantz uses the most appropriate speaker template for your setup. Likewise, experienced users should strongly consider shelling out a few more dollars to purchase Audyssey’s Mult-EQ Editor app. Doing so gives greater control and customisation over the EQ process. For example, it let me limit Audyssey’s frequency range to 5kHz and turn off Mid Range Compensation – neither of which would have been possible without the app. The ability to store two different calibrated profiles on the SR7015 is a much-needed addition over previous models. It enables a range of options, including separate calibrations for movie watching and two-channel listening.
For this review, the SR7015 was partnered with VAF Signature i91 front and centre loudspeakers and four VAF i90 speakers used for surround and overhead Atmos channels. The SR7015’s dual subwoofer outputs were connected to custom 10” VAF Gravitas subwoofers for a 5.2.2 Atmos layout. Video devices consisted of a Panasonic UB9000 4K Blu-ray player and Apple TV, connected directly to a Lumagen Radiance Pro. Images were projected onto a 100” Severtson Cinegray 16.9 screen by a Sony VPL-VW270ES native 4K projector.
THE LISTENING
The SR7015 creates a dynamic home theatre experience with powerful bass extension. When it needs to be, it can also be a remarkably laid back sounding machine equally as comfortable with music listening sessions as it is with action blockbusters. For example, as the M41 Walker Bulldogs make their appearance in the 4K Blu-ray of Full Metal Jacket, the SR7015 produced an impressive amount of bass, enabling my subwoofers to not only be heard but also clearly felt from the main listening position.
The Marantz creates a soundstage that not only has a sense of height but width, with objects placed accurately within the sound field. It can’t quite capture the same transparency as the big flagships, but indeed turns in an impressive performance. With the 4K Blu-ray of Hunter Killer, the SR7015 didn’t possess quite the same level of precision or channel steering capabilities as its equivalent Denon stablemate. What little it lacked, though, it makes up for with far more natural sound. Ultimately the SR7015 proved more musical than its counterpart.
As the barbarian hordes deliver their answer to the waiting Roman army in the 4K Blu-ray of Gladiator, the SR7015 creates a large airy sense of space in the room. When the Romans unleash hell, the Marantz’s amplifiers are more than up to the task at hand. Oil pots explode in the tall trees with enough ferocity to make for a dynamic, exciting and visceral viewing experience.
With the PCM 5.1 on the streamed version of The Empty Man, the SR7015 made ample use of all the speakers, enveloping the listener in the menacing sound field it creates. As James investigates the bridge or treks into the woods around the cabin, the SR7015 fills the sound field with the buzzing insect life, showing excellent low-level detail retrieval.
THE VERDICT
There’s a reason that flagship AV receivers command a premium price tag, so it should come as no surprise that the SR7015 can’t reach the dizzy heights of Marantz’s higher-priced SR8015. However, what was unexpected is just how capable the mid-range model is. It’s got everything necessary for a thrilling, engaging home theatre experience, with a big soundstage, solid dynamics and powerful bass. What little it yields in terms of pinpoint accuracy it more than makes up for with musical ability. So if you’re in the market for an affordable quality receiver that’s equally at home with action blockbusters as it is with music, I’d strongly suggest an audition.

Es ist schon bewundernswert, wie konsequent die Entwickler von Sound United vorgehen. Vor allem für ihre Vorzeige-Marken Denon und Marantz haben sie ein Baukasten-System entwickelt, mit dem sich – so scheint es – jede Preisklasse im AV-Receiver-Bereich perfekt bedienen lässt. LowBeats machte die Probe aufs Exempel und hat sich den Marantz SR7015 ins Testkino bestellt. Und tatsächlich: Mit seinen außerordentlich umfangreichen Ausstattungspaket und seinem Preis von 1.700 Euro dürfte er für das Gros der anspruchsvollen Anwender den wohl besten Schnitt aus Preis, Funktionen und Leistung darstellen.
Das Konzept des Marantz SR7015
Seien wir ehrlich: Die Industriedesigner hatten hier keine Arbeit. Der SR7015 sieht aus wie alle anderen Marantz Receiver auch – und zwar seit Jahren. Das meine ich nicht negativ, die Front mit den geschwungenen Wangen und der großen Klappe ist jedenfalls recht zeitlos. Lobenswert auch, dass sich unter der Abdeckung noch immer vollwertige Kopfhörer-, USB- und HDMI-Buchsen finden; diese rationalisieren andere Hersteller mittlerweile immer häufiger weg. Doch wer seinen Marantz ohnehin überwiegend mit App oder Webmenü bedient, braucht die große Anzeige tatsächlich nicht ständig im Blick zu haben. Also Deckel zu.
Hinter der wuchtigen Front steckt allerneueste Technik in Sachen HDMI-Signalverarbeitung und Surround-Decoding. Das Videoboard gehorcht bereits der HDMI 2.1 Norm mit Auflösungen bis 8K, Frame-Raten bis 120 fps und allen für Gamer optimierten Funktionen wie Auto-Low-Latency-Modus (ALLM) und Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Sämtliche HDR-Standards beherrscht der Marantz sowieso. Mehr Zukunft eingebaut bietet aktuell kein anderer. Natürlich sind auch die drei großen Surround-Decoder/Upmixer-Familien mitsamt Dolby Atmos, DTS:X und Auro-3D integriert und garantieren Film- und Musikspaß im ganzen Raum.
Die Signalverarbeitung bietet 11 Kanäle mit 2 Subwoofern, die sich gemeinsam entzerren, aber separat pegeln und verzögern lassen. Das steht alles an den Cinch-Ausgängen bereit. Allerdings hat der Marantz SR7015 „nur“ 9 Endstufen mit je bis zu 200 Watt Leistungsabgabe integriert. Die lassen sich aber je nach Konfiguration für verschiedene Szenarien zuordnen und dürften für die meisten Anwendungen mehr als ausreichen: die gebräuchlichsten Lautsprecherkonfigurationen sind derzeit entweder 7.1 oder 5.1.4. Wer die maximale 7.2.4-Konfiguration nutzen möchte, sollte zum größeren Marantz SR8015 greifen – oder mit einer externen Endstufe oder Aktivlautsprechern nachrüsten.
In der Beschreibung hebt Marantz besonders noch den Phono-Eingang mit HDAM EQ Stage hervor. Das ist durchaus etwas Besonderes, denn die meisten AV-Receiver haben – wenn überhaupt – einen eher lausigen Phono-Klang. Also habe ich den Plattenspieler angeklemmt, die LP ordnungsgemäß gebürstet, Nadel runter und los. In der Tat klang der Marantz überdurchnittlich gut mit Vinyl, knackige Attacke im Mittelton, angenehm seidige Höhen und recht präziser Bass bei schön ausgewogener tonaler Balance. Da rauschte oder brummte auch nix. Sehr überzeugend.
HEOS: Streaming und Multiroom audiophil
Wie alle aktuellen Geräte der Sound United Familie steckt auch im Marantz SR7015 ein HEOS-Modul. Das sorgt für Audio-Streaming, erledigt das Abspielen direkt eingestöpselter Sticks oder Festplatten und nimmt per Funk mittels Bluetooth oder AirPlay 2 Musik von Handhelds entgegen. Auch die Vernetzung von Musik quer durch die Wohnung organisiert HEOS praktisch von alleine. Das gilt selbst für analoge Quellen, wenn man etwa die im Wohnzimmer drehende LP in der Küche beim Kochen genießen möchte. Im Test des Stereo-Receivers Marantz PM7000N habe ich ein Video dazu gemacht. Apropos Bluetooth: Auch Drahtloskopfhörer kann dieser Receiver direkt ansteuern. Das HEOS-Modul sorgt zudem für die Sprachsteuerung mittels Alexa, Siri oder Google Assistant.
Übrigens: Auch im Falle des SR7015 lohnt sich die Anschaffung der Audyssey MultEQ Editor App, um bessere Ergebnisse bei der üblichen Einmessung zu erzielen. Für rund 20 Euro wird dann das vollständige Signal des Messmikros im Speicher und mit der Rechenpower des Smartphones oder Tablets berechnet. Das ist in der Regel als mit den intgrierten DSPs des Receivers. Und noch so eine Neuerung: Seit kurzem erlauben Marantz Receiver, auch zwei Lautsprecherkonfigurationen/Einmessungen zu verwalten. Man könnte beispielsweise separate Einstellungen für Musik- und Filmwiedergabe konfigurieren.
Im Hörtest zeigte der SR7015 die typischen Marantz-Tugenden: Nämlich mit einem vergleichsweise erdigen Timbre und schönem musikalischen Fluß, gepaart mit ausreichend Kraft, selbst große Dynamiksprünge in Aktionfilmen ungebremst in den Raum zu drücken. Auch der Klang via HDMI rückt mittlerweile erstaunlich nah an SPDIF und Streaming ran – was unterstellt, dass Marantz hier ein gutes Entjittern gelingt.
Fazit: Toller Klang und pralle Ausstattung
Man sollte tatsächlich überrascht sein, dass eine derart reiche Ausstattung und das hier gebotene Klangniveau für deutlich unter 2.000 Euro zu haben sind. Dieser Receiver kann echt alles, was derzeit gefordert, hip oder modern ist, egal ob neueste HDMI-Standards oder Sprachsteuerung, sämtliche Formate von Dolby Atmos bis zu DSD Streaming. Und bei all dem liefert er eine solide Klangperformance mit musikalischen Qualitäten, gepaart mit satter Kraft. Obwohl etwas ungewöhnlich, sticht der vergleichsweise aufwändig ausgeführte Phono-Eingang doch mit kernigem, ausgewogenem Klang hervor. Tja, der Marantz SR7015 kann eben Analog und Digital, Stereo und Surround. Klasse.
